The gentleman in the middle is our head cutter in Mogok. We are still trying to improve the cuts, but with rudimentary equipment I do think they are doing a decent job. My partner and I are looking at buying new equipment for them for precision cutting, starting with some felt pads and diamond paste.
Interestingly enough when talking to one of my friends recently (who is also a cutter), whilst he laments on the small stuff, he has stated on many occasions how amazed he is that they were able to extract fine stones out of seemingly impossible rough.
These guys understand an incredible amount about inclusions, and I think the proof in the pudding will come about when they gain access to new equipment bought by us.
In the meantime we are trying to sell some of their pieces to put back into lapidary so we can afford to have them working for us on a full time basis.
If we are to do so, we would aim to not only increase the quality of production, but also to help increase their standards of living by paying a fair wage, implementing safe working conditions, a five day work week, and offering  medical and educational benefits. That's our long term goal.
